Pembahasan:
Pada soal di atas meminta kita untuk memberikan makna dari suatu kalimat. Pada kalimat tersebut disebutkan “The minister would have attended the meeting If she had returned from middle east” yang memiliki arti “Menteri akan menghadiri pertemuan itu jika dia kembali dari timur tengah”.
Kalimat pada soal di atas merupakan penggunaan if clause tipe third conditional yang berfungsi untuk menyatakan penyesalan tentang hal yang tidak dilakukan. Pola untuk kalimat third conditional, yaitu If + S + had + V3 + O, S + would have + V3 + O.
Kalimat tersebut merupakan kalimat pengandaian, sehingga fakta yang sebenarnya adalah “The minister did not attend the meeting because she had not returned from the middle east” yang memiliki arti “Menteri tidak hadir dalam pertemuan itu karena dia belum kembali dari timur tengah”.
