Pembahasan:
Pada soal di atas meminta kita untuk memberikan makna dari suatu kalimat. Pada kalimat tersebut disebutkan “Were the doctor here, he would examine Mary” yang memiliki arti “Jika dokter ada di sini, dia akan memeriksa Mary”.
Kalimat pada soal di atas merupakan penggunaan if clause tipe second conditional. Pola untuk kalimat second conditional, yaitu If + S + V2 + O, S + would + V1 + O. Pola untuk kalimat second conditional jika tanpa menggunakan if, yaitu Were + S + adverb, S + would + V1 + O.
Kalimat tersebut merupakan kalimat pengandaian tipe second conditional, sehingga fakta yang sebenarnya adalah dalam bentuk simple present, yaitu “Mary cannot be examined because the doctor is not here” yang memiliki arti “Mary tidak dapat diperiksa karena dokter tidak ada di sini”.
