Pembahasan:
Pada soal di atas meminta kita untuk memberikan makna dari suatu kalimat. Pada kalimat tersebut disebutkan “Were the doctor here, he would immediately examine our father” yang memiliki arti “Jika dokter ada di sini, dia akan segera memeriksa ayah kami”.
Kalimat pada soal di atas merupakan penggunaan if clause tipe second conditional. Pola untuk kalimat second conditional, yaitu If + S + V2 + O, S + would + V1 + O. Pola untuk kalimat second conditional jika tanpa menggunakan if, yaitu Were + S + adverb, S + would + V1 + O.
Kalimat tersebut merupakan kalimat pengandaian tipe second conditional, sehingga fakta yang sebenarnya adalah dalam bentuk simple present, yaitu “the doctor is not here so our father cannot be examined” yang memiliki arti “dokter tidak ada di sini jadi ayah kami tidak bisa diperiksa”.
